Emotions are complicated. We can be fine one minute, and a wreck the next. Whether you can’t stop yelling at your loved ones, you keep breaking down at work or in class, or you’re constantly feeling on edge, I help people learn to feel their emotions without getting overwhelmed by them.
-
It’s one thing to space out every once in a while. It’s another to constantly feel like a zombie, watching everyone else seem to enjoy their lives while you can’t seem to feel anything. I help people figure out what’s causing their emotional disconnection so they can find their feelings and start living again.
-
How do we talk about feelings in the relationships that matter most? And what’s the point? While emotional communication in relationships is essential for trust and intimacy, it can also be terrifying, confusing, or downright exhausting. I help people learn to talk about their feelings effectively without having to become a therapist, themselves, in the process.
-
We all enjoy what we enjoy, but when we end up using our pleasures to try and escape stress or pain, our pleasures can become a prison of craving and obsession. Compulsively thinking about when we can indulge next, while perhaps at the same time knowing we’re only digging ourselves deeper. I help people free themselves from their addiction-prisons. When we understand how the addiction is actually medicine for an underlying issue, we can focus on what’s driving the addiction and resolve it at its source.
-
Being anxious or nervous can feel terrible. But being this way most of the time can feel debilitating and hopeless. We try to tell ourselves to just relax, that everything’s okay, but it doesn’t seem to touch our body’s experience. Whether you experience a rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, persistent sweating, uncontrollable shaking, racing thoughts, dizziness, spacey-ness, or all of the above, I help people learn to work with their body’s experience, so you can actually calm down and feel grounded again.
-
Relationships are challenging. But when it feels like all you experience are challenges, or the same challenges over and over again, it’s easy to ask yourself, “What’s the point?” We want to make things better, but we often don’t know what to do. Whether you keep finding yourself in relationships that don’t work or stuck in the same issue(s) with your current relationship, I help people learn to work with their relationship challenges differently so they can enjoy their relationship and also feel competent as challenges arise.
-
Who am I? It’s perhaps the question that everyone asks themselves at one point or another. But when you don’t have an answer or the answer doesn’t match who you or others think you should be, it can feel frustrating, confusing, and even depressing. How do we know who we are? Or, perhaps more importantly, how do we give ourselves permission to be who we are when that means risking rejection. I help people learn to connect with their own honesty and truth so they can discover who they are and who they want to be at their own pace.

About Jake
Professional Experience
I am a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist in Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Kansas.
Since 2008, I’ve provided counseling and psychotherapy to adults, couples, and groups in a variety of settings, from community mental health to outpatient clinics and, starting in 2018, my own private practice.
My clinical education includes studies in somatic (body-focused) therapies, Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, attachment-informed therapies, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and clinical hypnosis.
Additionally, I have extensive training in energy work theories and methods. Currently, I provide individual therapy for adults in-person in College Station, TX, as well as online across the midwest.
Personal Background
I was raised on the shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. With only a handful of neighbors my age, I spent lots of time immersed in nature, hiking in the woods behind my home, or on the rocky beach of the great lake, or up the rivers that fed it.
Growing up, I was interested in music, ideas, and people. I found my place playing the drums in various high school bands as well as my own rock band.
With an adventurous spirit, I initially struggled to find a career path that felt right. And so, I swung hammers, bussed tables, and traveled and wrote in my free time.
But when a therapist I had been seeing suggested I would be good at being a therapist, myself, things started to click. I found my place in work that continues to feel profoundly exciting and meaningful.
Today, I still enjoy music, nature, writing, and hiking. Playing the drums has given way to the ukulele (easier for the kiddos to seep through). I absolutely love spending time with my family; they continue to teach me so much everyday.
I am a father, a husband, a son, a brother, a friend, a writer, a teacher, a forever-student, and a therapist.
